One of the skin’s major functions is to provide a barrier between the body and the outside environment. The layer of the skin responsible for this, the stratum corneum, is essentially made up of stacks of cells encased in a thick coating of lipids. It could be likened to a brick wall, with the lipids as the mortar. This wall provides a barrier to the outflow of water and electrolytes from our interior while promoting a protective shield against the entry of bacteria, allergens and UV light from the environment.
The lipid content of the skin is reliant on an adequate dietary supply of omega 6 fatty acids or linoleic acid. While these dietary oils are quite prevalent in the diet, they must be converted via an enzyme named delta-6 desaturase into gamma linolenic acid (GLA), the fatty acid that is needed to complete the skin surface lipid structure. Unfortunately the action of delta 6 desaturase is often impaired due to many reasons including genetics, thyroid dysfunction, infections, blood sugar problems, menopause, aging and a poor diet, meaning low levels of GLA in the skin and a poorly functioning skin lipid barrier.
This can mean two things; the skin is unable to maintain moisture levels resulting in dry, rough, dull, dehydrated skin prone to fine lines, wrinkles and UV damage; the skin has trouble keeping out microbes, bacteria and allergens resulting in sensitive, reactive skin, dermatitis, rosacea, acne and eczema.
Radiance Oil of Beauty provides a synergistic blend of New Zealand grown evening primrose oil (EPO) and blackcurrant seed oil (BSO) alongside New Zealand grown astaxanthin to help support a healthy lipid barrier in the skin.
EPO and BSO are sources of GLA, bypassing the need for conversion and thereby supporting a strong, healthy lipid barrier. Both oils are shown to help support optimal skin moisture, alongside promoting smoothness, elasticity and firmness. As both oils aid in supporting the lipid layer and support healthy inflammatory processes in the body they also show promise in supporting those with irritated, inflamed skin. Both BSO and EPO are also seen to promote hormonal harmony and support a healthy menstrual cycle and menopausal transition. Black currant oil is also thought to promote healthy hair growth and condition.
To this blend we have added the super antioxidant astaxanthin. This natural, New Zealand grown antioxidant super antioxidant supports supple, glowing skin while helping to support the body’s natural defence mechanisms against inflammation and environmental and UV damage. As it is such a potent antioxidant it is also shown to benefit irritated skin and also support brain, eye, joint, heart health and recovery after exercise.
